Chapter Nine

Faelynn

I bit my tongue until I could taste blood as Raff left the apartment. I held my breath, listening to his footsteps fade, while fighting the anguish and panic.

Darkness shrouded my thoughts as I felt my mate traveling further and further away from me. My wolf was frantically trying to convince me to go after him.

‘He’s not supposed to leave us,’ my wolf growled, rightfully upset.

Mating was different for every couple. The only similarities were the need for proximity and touch. If that meant sitting in a room and talking or fucking for days. The bond needed that time to solidify and all wolves respected that, but it was another matter for true mates. True mates were hardly ever found since arranged marriages were the norm.

Anger filled me at the thought of Raff not being here with me. I wasn’t angry at him but at the circumstances that seemed to always keep us apart. I wanted to shake my fist at fate and curse him but I didn’t want to anger him. Fate brought Raff and I together not once but twice. I prayed that we’d find our way back to each other.

My wolf growled unhappily but managed to get control of herself. She didn’t like this situation either but we had a task before us. Find our way home and prepare for Raff’s return.

He would return.

I felt his conviction when he swore to come for me today. Raff was an alpha to be reckoned with, I could feel the dominance that ran through him. Plus he was mated now which granted the alpha power. We’d both been bred for this.

‘We have to go home,’ I told my wolf, taking my despair and shoving it way down.

‘Yes we do,’ my wolf reluctantly agreed.

I dragged myself out of bed, filling my lungs with Raff’s scent and committing it to memory. I grabbed one of his tee shirts from the chest of drawers and a pair of boxers. No way was I going home in my ball gown. I already looked like I’d be doing the walk of shame.

I used the facilities then resigned myself to going home barefoot.

I wandered down to the bookstore and used the phone to call home for a ride. My directions were vague and I hoped I’d be spotted on the sidewalk instead of near here. Didn’t want Raff getting into any more trouble.

I stuffed my dress into a plastic store bag then left through the door I’d ducked into last night. The bell jingled causing a small smile to lift my lips as I remembered the sound being a catalyst to change my life.

It was late morning but a brisk wind brought the scent of fall with it. I strolled down the sidewalk with confidence so no one would question why I was barefoot.

Three blocks later a black town car with tinted windows pulled to the curb. A young wolf hopped out and scurried to the sidewalk. He wore the light blue and teal colors of my pack and I recognized him as a member of the household staff.
